Getting Ish Done
me versus a shark
This weekend, I accomplished the task of traipsing around DC, admiring the taxidermy in the Natural History Museum at the Smithsonian, inhaling a chili cheese half-smoke, chili cheese fries, and a strawberry shake at Ben's Chili Bowl, trying out the Adams Morgan Sunrise at Tryst, and, oh yeah, a bit of reading.
me versus a bear
bumpin
my boyfriend may never understand it, but i have r&b love rooted deep in my soul. and by deep i mean, it's probably my favorite thing to listen to ever. so when i was feeling a little blase and anxious today, my friend mike's new r&b mix took me out of my funk in all the right ways. eric benet and 702! how can you even deny it. i'm going to play this so much i'll know the song order. i love r&b.

Being a Creator
People say "you're only bored if you're boring," so I guess lately I've been pretty boring myself. I'm finally getting over jetlag, so now I can fully blame work for taking up most of my time and energy. The moment my head hits the pillow at night, I'm out, leaving all craft time and reading for the next day. Then that rolls over to the next day and then the next, and before you know it, it's been almost two weeks since I've done anything productive that's not work-related.
So now, I'm setting some goals for the next couple of weeks, and that's just to create. Whether it be cooking a decent meal, knitting the sleeves of a sweater, sewing a cotton skirt, or catching up on the last two months' worth of One Story, something must get done!
With that declaration out of the way, here are some shots of various objects in my apartment. This is what gets done with a lazy Friday night and a camera.

Summer Kicks
The weather here in VA has driven me to wear long, thick socks, drink gallons of hot tea with milk, pore over summer time books (for me, books, like music, can fall into seasonal categories--Cat Stevens screams winter and Faulkner is best in hot weather--but lately, I've been reading summer books to quell my desire for summer to reappear), daydream about trips to Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires, and search for new summer sandals. I walked a pair to death in Dubai, so here are a few I'd like to have as replacements...if only I could afford them.

life isn't fair
my hair has gotten long. really, really long. which is good, because i always get these urges to chop all my hair off, which i tend to pursue and then endlessly regret. but it's pictures like this that make me think, "if i cut my hair like that, i'll totally look like that." fight the urge!
and she's 16! when i was 16 i looked like a damn fool. what a cruel world.

Lovely Ladies
They inspire me to paint my toenails, dance around my apartment, and put a little more effort into my hair.

Gold Souq-ee-douq-ee Now!
The Odyssey
The last leg of the Dubai trip was filled with mini day trips to Sharjah and Al Ain in buses and taxis prone to breaking down. Here's a pic of us relaxing on a grassy roundabout after our taxi broke down in the fast lane. Luckily, we had already taken lunch and tea at a local Pakistani restaurant and a stroll through the oasis, so we were more than happy to just lounge in the sun until another taxi arrived.
Once that taxi came, we made our way up the mountain, Jebel Hafeet, where you can see into Oman from the top.
The rest of the week was spent in Dubai, but it was far from boring. We had already found our favorite spots and characters, and they provided more than enough entertainment: favorite shopkeeper (dubbed Cat Man because he would often play with a furry cat figurine he had in the store whenever he was bored or tired of dealing with customers), favorite fruit juice vendor (dubbed Beefcake for obvious reasons), favorite restaurant owner (Yogesh who helped us with what little Hindi we knew, which was mostly just how to say "My name is Melinda. I like gulab jamun."), favorite hotel staff member (spry little Mr. Lobo who served us heaping portions of dessert whether we wanted them or not) and others. When it was finally time for our trip to end, the endless snowing in Virginia turned our one hour layover in London into a 24 hour adventure. But now I'm home and I promise more posts!
